Just daydreaming of burnt sky, Montauk highway and making my way back to New York.

The Design Library, Cold Springs, New York

From time to time something special happens and you know that your lucky to be having that experience. I felt this way back in September when i visited the Design library just outside of Cold Springs, New York with several other work colleagues.

An hour outside of Manhattan; Cold Springs is found along the scenic Hudson river. It is a beautiful little town that shines in early Autumn as it becomes engulfed in rusty and golden ochre’s. Welcomed by Richard Weissman the President and head of Apparel,  Richard became our tour guide for the day. As he took us through the collections history he proved to be not only insightful but a design history wiz .

With only a day to spare i suddenly felt an overwhelming sense that i would not even be able to see a fraction of this amazing collection of prints sourced many times the world over. So from African motifs to Hawaiian tiki i searched and searched. Leaving with only several prints i hope to be back soon. It was such an amazing place to visit and made even more amazing by the people who work at the Design Library. Not hard to see why you love what you do…

I finally got to see Bill Cunningham New York a few nights ago and now I have a few more reasons to love New York. Bill is the first and original street photographer who for the last 40 years has been documenting New York street style. He lives a rather simple life which then contrasts the events which he photographs. A rather lone figure, Bill Cunningham truly prospers in New York; proving even the lonesome are never alone in the big city. I love the idea of the camera being the one and only thing he needs to feel connected and part of this world. Please see it if you can, i hope I’m still fascinated with the world when I’m 80 years old…

190 Bowery, New York City

Several years ago I read about a building on the Bowery in New York that looked liked it hadn’t been open in over a century. I knew I had to go and see this place for myself and see what the fuss was about. Becoming a haven for graffiti artists this building has become a canvas that changes nearly every month. In the article which was written for NY mag the writer discovers that the buliding has been occupied by one owner for almost 40 years. This building is now valued at almost $70 million and was purchased for only $102,000.

What is more amazing is the inside, the photos taken reveal the remnants of an old Bank that has been converted into a home for photographer Jay Maisel, his wife and daughter. It’s hard to believe that a family lives here but it’s even harder to believe that the exterior and internal photos are of the same house. Imagine having your own safe deposit vault, not sure what i would use it for but nonetheless a great stop on any house tour.

Global Gangway is a zine I created back in 1996. I came up with the name after traveling on the last carriage home and it has stayed with me since. There is something so symbolic about train travel that reminds me to never stop exploring. With my Dad's help in the dark room I found a few perfect frames for the first edition. 15 years later my journey continues.
